Michael Mann’s motion picture “Public Enemies” continues a tradition of stylish music set to film. No stranger to pulse-pounding soundtracks from Miami Vice to Heat to Collateral this time it is Otis Taylor’s “10 million slaves” behind the trailer of his new film.

A tradition going back to 1981’s Thief, to the run of TV’s Miami Vice 1984 to 1989. Then there is the relentless soundtracks of Manhunter, Ali and “I Will Find You” Clannad’s contribution to The Last of the Mohicans.

With Otis Taylor a musician known as an artist that has never skirted tough subject matter. His music at times can resemble the poetry of South African poet Stephen Biko who was embodied musically with Peter Gabriel’s “Biko”. Taylor who was born in 1948 and returned to music in 1995 and released two albums after participating in the National Blues Foundation. The song found on the album “Respect for the Dead” which is considered a great follow-up to “White African” his masterpiece. Otis Taylor makes a great addition to the continuing soundtrack of Mann’s motion pictures. If you find yourself itching for an artist that is pushing limits and making exciting music you can start here.
