New Music: SLV & Meshell Ndegeocello

I had the good fortune of meeting Sandra L. Velasquez (SLV) a couple of years ago. We talked about having really young kids and her then project being presented at the LA Times book festival. It was Moona Luna’s “Piñata Party” which is another talented effort of hers by the way. I was already a fan of her band “Pistolera” where she was the lead singer on their albums “Simpre Hay Salida” and “En Este Camino.”

The first song I discovered of Pistolera was “Me Gusta Tomar” and while that drinking song is festive, hilarious and upbeat you can hear another artist in there. In that song the soulful sound of Sandra’s voice proves to have so much talent to burn.

As good luck would have it Sandra hit a creative streak early in 2012 and has teamed up with musician and one time downtown L.A. resident Meshell Ndegeocello.

I learned about Meshell Ndegeocello and her funky bass through the musician John Mellencamp’s “Wild Night”. It is a song that benefits from the magnitude of her talent ( ). Colleagues and fans have continued to admire and derive inspiration from this singer-songwriter, rapper, bassist, producer and vocalist.

Most recently I had come across Ndegeocello’s cover of Smokey Robinson’s 1962 hit “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” ( ) from the soundtrack to the film “Standing In The Shadows of Motown.” I stopped everything to find that album which also includes Joan Osborne, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Khan and The Funk Brothers.

Following the release of 2011′s critically acclaimed album “Weather”, Ndegeocello released her 10th studio album “Pour une âme souveraine (“For a sovereign soul”)”, a dedication to fellow musician Nina Simone. She worked alongside dedicated musicians and reworked some of the tracks made famous by Nina Simone an artist who refused to be owned by genre, industry, or expectation.

In the two-minute video below Sandra breaks down the making of SLV’s solo debut EP called “Dig Deeper” which is being produced by Meshell Ndegeocello. “Dig Deeper” is already one album to watch out for in 2013.
